DIY: Gift-Wrapped Wreath

Isn't December a great time to have budget woes?

First, I decided to fly to Minnesota for a week. Then one of my jobs cut my hours by 8 hours per week. Then, I got sick and had to miss a day of work. And then---then!!---well, there's more, and it's only December 4th.

I don't look forward to seeing what else decides to rain on my parade this month.

Anyway, I had drawn up this great blogging schedule. . . I was going to make wreaths and cookies and all sorts of things. . .

But it's looking like you're going to get a series on 101 Ways to Eat Lentils until my finances stabilize.

Okay, not quite. I don't give up that easy.

Tuesday night, after getting some more bad news, I sat down and re-did my budget and realized that if I bought the crafty stuff for my blogging schedule--even if it only amounted to $5-$10--it would be cutting into my already slender gift-giving fund.

I was irked.

In fact, I kind of went on a war-path.

And sometimes my war-paths result in wreaths that cost absolutely nothing to make. (Sometimes they look that way, too, but I'm actually kind of pleased with how this one turned out.)

Would you like some free home decor?

Here's what I did....

I don't really like wire hangers as wreath bases, so I scrounged my apartment for something else and found this cardboard box in a closet! I traced a wreath pattern onto it with a pot lid and a bowl and then cut it out with a utility knife. . .

Voila! Free wreath base.

Then I cleaned out my desk. Remember when I said how I save wrapping paper like it's the Depression? Yep, I emptied all my stashes of old wrapping paper, cards, gift bags, and other scraps, and collected everything that was red or green. I had a lot of shiny green tissue paper, so I cut it into strips and started wrapping it around my base. I rolled the raw edges under, and secured the ends with tape on the back.

Then I looked through my sewing basket and found some scraps of red and white rick-rack and red ribbon.  More tape!  I cut some berry shapes out of red valentine's day gift bags, and free-handed a reindeer on an old golden envelope. Applied more tape. And tucked in a pipe-cleaner candy cane.

And then I texted a friend and was like, "You'll never believe the home decor item I just made out of total garbage."

Take that, budget! Here's what it looks like by my front door. I had a silver jingle bell wreath up previously, but it was small, sad, and really blended into our weird-colored wall. This is a definite improvement.

Sorry about the poor picture quality. When you go on wreath-making war-paths, you don't always have the best lighting. . . .

What are you working on today?
